The noun meaning "mnemonic device" is from 1858. Mnemosyne, lit. "memory, remembrance," was a titaness, mother of the Muses.
According to Wikipedia, Mnemoysne "was the personification of memory in Greek mithology. This titaness was the daughter of Gaia and Uranus and the mother of the nine Muses by Zeus."
